Abstract

Based on theoretical approach and surface observations, insolation weathering is an ongoing process on Mars today or it was recently. The background of this process is summarized in the study, as well as the authors’ research on the daily temperature variation on the planet. The observations suggest that daily temperature changes around 40-60 degrees are quite usual on Mars, especially at the dry, low latitude surface regions of the planet. The maximum value during the daily temperature changes rarely exceed zero degree Celsius where substancial waterice is available - but subzero temperature fluctuation may be substancial in rocks containing waterice. - (AM)
