The province of Podlasie currently encompasses only the northern part of the former Podlasie region, it now includes some fragments of the historical Masovia and of provinces of the ancient Lithuania. It has changed its national politico-administrative status several times over the 19th and in the first half of the 20th century. Now it is mainly inhabited by Poles, but also by Belarusians, and, less numerous Ukrainians, Lithuanians and Tartars (before the World War II it was home to an important Jewish community). Generally, Poles are Catholics, while Belarusians and Ukrainians are Eastern Orthodox (several Orthodox Christians consider themselves as Poles or are willing to declare a double nationality). Yet, conflicts are few, the interference of cultural patterns is being observed along with numerous social forms of mutual assistance (for instance replacing colleagues in the workplace, when they observe religious holidays). - (BJ)
