Abstract

Here, the AA. report six Be 10 ages associated with the Brandenburg, Frankfurt and Pomeranian moraines. These new data provide the first direct age estimate of the LGM and the deglaciation in the Berlin area. The results date the retreat from the last glacial maximum advance (Brandenburg phase),the retreat from the Frankfurt phase and the retreat from the Pomeranian moraines. The age of the Pomeranian moraine is younger than assumed by previous authors. The ages of Weichselian ice marginal positions in Brandenburg are younger than the ages of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet (SIS) moraines in Denmark and northern Germany. The AA. present a theoretical model of the mode of deglaciation of the Baltic ice lobe from the SIS that can explain the new as well as existing field observations
