Abstract

During colonial rule the high mountain region of Ladakh was at the core one important trade and transit route from the subcontinent to Central Asia. After the partition of British India in 1947 and the Sino-Indian war in 1962, trans-Himalayan trade collapsed and Ladakh became a peripheral and contested borderland. In light of continuing geostrategic importance and significant socio-economic changes, livelihood strategies have diversified although agrarian land use remains the economic mainstay. - (IfL)
