Abstract

Calgary is the first North American city, to get its environmental protection programme assessed and certified by international criteria. This is even more remarkable given the fact that the city is growing by more than 100 people per day - based on an unprecedented economic boom - and that the total population has just crossed the 1 million mark. Thus, Calgary is the city in Canada at which environmental impacts can be illustrated best. The essay shows the specific environmental problems Calgary is confronted with. It describes the solutions envisioned and how they are put into reality. They resemble strategies that are similar to European cities, yet Calgary has an "environmental footprint" double their size. In this context the optimism if not enthusiasm is remarkable, though the dualism between protecting the environment and pursuing a very dynamic economic growth remains. - (IfL)
