Abstract

The aim of this paper is to document the mineralogical and geochemical evolution of a coastal lateritic paleosol developed in South-West Spain from Late Neogene to Quaternary, and discuss the genesis of its associated kaolin deposits within the context of the lateritic environment. The geochemical and mineralogical evolution of the paleosol studied is consistent with a laterization process evolved under humid subtropical conditions, and driven by morphodynamic and hydrodynamic factors (gently sloping coastal area with fluctuating water table and rapid water percolation) favourable for the development of a deeply kaolinized paleosurface
