Radar surveys of Bench Glacier, Alaska, collected over five field seasons between 2002 and 2006 reveal a surface layer of radar transparent ice in this temperate valley glacier. This transparent layer has similar radar characteristics to the cold layer in polythermal glaciers, but the temperate thermal regime of Bench Glacier suggests that it represents a hydrological/mechanical property of the ice, not a thermal one
