The objective of this paper is to understand martian fan deltas, their formative conditions, evolution and formative duration, with the overall aim to infer implications for the past climate. Recent progress in fan delta experimentation and modelling is reviewed. This paper consists of 2 parts. The first part is an introduction to Mars, its general physiography, water-related morphology and past and present climate. The second major part is devoted to fan deltas on Mars
