Abstract

Contrary to the messages of impending environmental gloom and disaster widely projected in the media, the fifteen contributors to this book argue that countless scientific issues are not as clear-cut as is often suggested, hence it is possible to construct a more optimistic vision for the future of the globe than that which is often delivered. They argue for a critical re-reading of the results of certain scientific analyses and offer nuanced interpretations of such issues as eco-catastrophism, global warming, sea-level rise, availability of water, biodiversity, forest cover, population change, food supply, energy, and conflict. The chapters represent the proceedings of a conference held at the headquarters of the Société de Géographie de Paris in September 2010. - (HC)
