Abstract

Introduction to some aspects of the Burmese culture and way of life. Every month of the Myanmar lunar calendar has its own season, its own flower, its own zodiacal sign, its own constellation and its own seasonal festival. During these festivals great pagodas are holding temple fairs attracting customers, pilgrims and spectators from all over the country. Out of 12 festivals, 8 are attached to Buddhist culture; 2 are remnants of the cultural influence of Hindu Brahmanism; the two others were originated with the Burmese monarchy. - (GL)
