Energy insecurity. How Total, Chevron, and PTTEP contribute to human rights violations, financial secrecy, and nuclear proliferation in Burma (Myanmar)

Abstract

According to ERI the oil companies have failed to stop human rights abuses occurring in relation to their natural gas project in Burma. They bear responsibility and remain vulnerable to liability. According to the report the companies are financing the world’s newest nuclear threat with multi-billion dollar payments and refuse to practice financial transparency despite calls by the Burmese and international community. However Total has in principle agreed to cooperate with the ILO to facilitate local complaints of forced labor to the ILO complaints mechanism, following ERI’s 2009 recommendation. - (GL)
