Modelling mid-channel bars in meandering channels

Based on existing field and experimental observations, the AA. propose 2 different mechanisms that may be responsible for the presence of mid-channel bars in meandering channels : a ‘width-forced’ and a ‘curvature-forced’ mechanism. They investigate the 2 processes separately within the same mathematical framework. Hypotheses on how these mechanisms operate are further discussed through an application to field cases (Sacramento River, USA; River Bollin and River Dean UK). The outcomes of this first modelling step on the subject allow discussion of the mutual feedback processes that characterize interactions between midchannel bars and width variations in river meanders
