Abstract

The aim of this paper is to provide an accurate estimation of catchment-wide erosion rates for a semi-arid mountainous region belonging to the Betic Cordillera. Modern erosion rates were estimated based on measurements of checkdam sedimentation in the Sierra de la Torrecilla and in the Sierra de Carrascoy. Several methods that have been used at the plot and regional scale will be applied at the catchment scale to enhance the understanding of the spatial variation in erosion rates. The relation between (spatial patterns of) vegetation cover and erosion rates will be discussed in detail. A variety of methods will be combined to measure and analyse spatial patterns in vegetation cover; and to evaluate their effect on water and sediment connectivity
