Abstract

Levainville had a remarkable career as a military officer and then as a businessman who developed a fascination for geography, producing a doctoral thesis on the Morvan and a major study of the city of Rouen. His family business involved him with iron-ore mining in Normandy and he was able to use this knowledge in small text on the iron industry (part of a book series edited by his friend Albert Demangeon) and in numerous academic articles and notes that dealt with aspects of economic geography. - (HC)
