Abstract

The aim of this paper is to elucidate the origins and geomorphic evolution of the Lake Shewa landslide dam in the Badakhshan Province of northeastern Afghanistan. At least 4 separate instances of slope failure have been mapped at the site, as well as a rock glacier, using remotely sensed data, historical maps, and Google Earth TM. Spring seepage through the dam face has caused several recent subsidiary debris slides, which could threaten its integrity. The AA. suggest further long-term observation for hazard potential, as well as possible future development of the area
