Abstract

After the second half of the 19th century, the Hungarian government began to introduce maps and atlases in education that were made by Hungarian authors. This policy required that the authors and publishers work out a system of writing the geographical names that considered the international trends of cartography as well as respected the tradition of writing certain foreign names in Hungarian. This paper reviews the development of the spelling of geographical names in Hungary. The examples come from various parts of the world that represent different writing systems. - (AM)
