Internal displacement and international law in Eastern Burma

Abstract

This survey compiles abuses by the Burmese army reported during 2008 in relation to the legal framework for crimes against humanity. Between 1996 and 2007, 3200 settlements were destroyed. IDP are estimated to be over half a million persons in eastern Burma. The authorities have constantly refused to enter into a serious discussions of these abuses with a view to putting a stop to them. That attitude encourages a climate of impunity for the armed forces. The international community is holding the junta to account. - (GL)
