Abstract

Than Shwe, most notorious dictator, presides over a military regime that persist in repressing and brutalizing its own people. The book provides the first-ever account of Than Shwe’s carrier from postal clerk to dictator. It analyses his rise through the ranks of the army, training in psychological warfare, belief in astrology, elimination of rivals, and ruthless suppression of dissent. The A, which works with Christian Solidarity Worldwide, describes the reclusive and xenophobic character of Than Shwe, and life in Burma under his rule. He explains why it is futile to expect any kind of engagement with the military without international pressure. Under Than Shwe’s rule the regime has destroyed Burma’s economy and wrought extraordinarily inhumane suffering on its people. - (GL)
