Abstract

This paper describes an attempt to apply unconventional methods in studying the functional structure of a mountain landscape, as exemplified by a research area in north-eastern Sørkappland (Spitsbergen). The approach is based around slope systems, since slopes account for the greater part of the land area in mountains and are the locations for important streams of matter and energy. The work assumed that the diversity of ways in which slope systems function is reflected in a diversity of geocomplex sequence types on slopes, i.e. in the presence of various geoecological catenas. Map of uroczysko areas, topographical maps and the results of fieldwork were all used to analyse the sequence of spatial units along slope catena lines. 30 types of geoecological catena were described as a result, and their extents determined to display spatial differences. The map arising in this way includes a mosaic of spatial units designated by the same type of functioning and hence dominated by the same geoecological catenas. – (BJ)
