Abstract

Recently there has been a convergence of transdisciplinary thought characterized by the engagement of geography with the humanities, and the integration of place and the tools of geography into humanities studies. This book traces this emerging intellectual terrain with 30 contributions from mainly North American architects, artists, activists and literary scholars as well as geographers. It explores the rapidly expanding engagement of the humanities with geography, charts multi-methodological enquiries that analyse the meanings of place, and then reconstructs those meanings to provoke new knowledge as well as the possibility of stimulating altered political practices. The book focuses on such topics as the link between creativity and place ; altered practices of spatial literacy; the increasing complexity of visual representation in art, culture, and science; and the ubiquitous presence of geospatial technologies in the information age. – (HC)
