Abstract

This geographical essay reflects on three inter-related themes : monuments, heritage, and memories. Monuments are seen as constructions of memory, shaped and fabricated by culturally-informed sections of individual nations. As a concept, heritage (patrimoine) has become increasingly accepted over the past half century, often specified by international institutions and bound up with both the benefits and disadvantages of related tourism activities. Our world is composed of memories that are utilized to specify, distinguish, and promote places of particular importance, working sometimes with new elements or on other occasions refashioning elements from the past. Numerous examples are explored in the text, including Lascaux, Oradour-sur-Glane, the Val d’Europe (to the east of Paris), London’s South Bank, Dubai, and Crécy-en-Ponthieu. – (HC)
