Abstract

Ukraine, called small Russia because the process of formation of Russia started from the Ukrainian city of Kiev, was one of the federal republics of the USSR. After the collapse of the soviet bloc and the sudden implosion of socialist regimes, Ukraine proclaimed its independence as a Presidential Republic on August 24, 1991. The new republic has been characterized by the transition to an open society, with the consolidation of a capitalist economy, privatizations and important reforms. However, Ukraine is still characterized by a deep economic crisis, while the path to democracy seems to be interrupted. - (NF)
