Listening to voices from inside : people’s perspectives on Myanmar’s 2010 elections

This NGO pamphlet analyses the perspectives of the 2010 election following the adoption by referendum of the 2008 Constitution. It presents the views of members of civil society, inside Myanmar, about the vote. These elections will not meet the international standards. The engagement of the civil society, such as “voter conscientisation”, should serve as the basis for political formation. The vote should not distract from efforts to address the variety of critical and pressing issues challenging Myanmar today. These include a country-wide humanitarian crisis, ongoing ethnic armed conflicts, widespread human rights violations and poverty. The international community should use the election as an opportunity to refocus their energy on these specific areas which desperately need to be addressed. - (GL)
