Based on data observed at gauging stations and runoff experimental plots, the AA. examined the flow-sediment relationship in the context of spatio-temporal scales for hilly loess areas, China. Firstly, the AA. examined the flow-sediment relationship at 3 spatial scales (plot, sub-watershed and watershed) and 3 timescales (intra-event, inter-event and annual) for hilly loess areas. For comparison between the loess Plateau and other regions, they also fit the flow-sediment relationship using power regressions, which is widely used to model the flow-sediment relationship, besides proportional and linear regressions. Then, they made a discussion on the general applicability of the proportional model and evaluated the runoff-sediment yield relationship for the Walnut Gulch Experimental watershed of USA, where sediment flux is generally transport-limited, as with in their case of the Loess Plateau
