In Canada and the US states, there is a specific legislation to govern the disposition of e-waste. The work of jurisdiction around e-waste places financial responsibility for waste management on consumers, not producers. Contra the explicit intent of the legislation, a regime of extended consumer responsibility is emerging and waste generated as a result of design and manufacturing remains taboo.
