Abstract

The case of a mobilization against urban renewal in San Francisco's Japantown is used to examine the scalar politics of that movement between the late 1960s and early 1980s. It is born on West Coast campuses as part of multiracial struggles to establish ethnic studies departments and create community-oriented higher education. It draws its inflences from the antiwar movement, Third World decolonization struggles, the women's movement, and the Black Power Movement.
