Richard Lawton, 1925-2010

Lawton was a British geographer who spent most of his career at the University of Liverpool. His research had significant impact across the field of historical and population geography. As an enthusiastic teacher and tutor he mentored many scholars working in these areas of the discipline. His publications ranged very widely across human geography, but especially dealt with the Liverpool region, nineteenth-century urbanization and industrialization in Britain, migration, and the use of detailed census materials in geographical enquiry. He served many geographical organizations in the United Kingdom over many years. - (HC)
