Abstract

This paper examines the neoliberal reshaping of infrastructure provision in Brazil’s extreme north since the mid-1990s, when roadway investments resulted in unprecedented regional connectivity. It shows that this project has spearheaded economic growth, albeit in geographically uneven conditions led by market forces. It concludes that the urban system has undergone a process of reperipheralization in the wake of neoliberal approaches to infrastructure provision—these have been biased to strengthen city cores in the context of heightened intermetropolitan and transnational competition
