This paper examines the factors that are related to attitudes toward immigrants in Europe and the role of institutional trust in shaping these attitudes. It does so by investigating separately two different groups of people – members of the ethnic majority and ethnic minority populations. The results show that trust is the variable that is most strongly associated with attitudes toward immigrants. This association is stronger among ethnic majority populations than among ethnic minorities, indicating that in the case of ethnic minorities the impact of some other determinants might be stronger or there might be a different set of determinants explaining their attitudes toward immigrants
