Using natural disasters to instigate radical policy changes. The effect of Fukushima nuclear power plant accident on nuclear energy policies

Abstract

Natural disasters and their effects reflect the interlinking physical and human environment of the modern world. After the earthquake and tsunami in Fukushima (2011), activists, lobbyist and reporters quickly judged nuclear technology and demanded at least a gradual phasing out of nuclear power plants, if not their immediate closure. Further research on the safety and ecological issues related to nuclear power plants has a crucial role as a powerful motivator in the search for alternative energy sources. - (IKR)
