Abstract

The examples described come mainly from the Var River valley in its densely populated populated coastal stretch adjacent to the city of Nice, and from its upstream tributaries. The role of geomorphology in appreciating and mitigating hazards is viewed within a two-part framework : 1) hillslope mass wasting and bedload transport and storage in stream channels, and 2) fine-grained sediment transport and storage in the downstream and coastal reaches of the Var
