Abstract

A debris flow event occurred in June 1997 in the Dolomites (Eastern Alps, Italy). The phenomenon was directly observed in the field and recorded by a video camera near its initiation area. The flow was triggered by a short duration, high-intensity rainfall that produced free water surficial flow in the channel bed. Immediately after the event, material was sampled for grain size analysis, density and water content measurements. Channel morphometric measurements were completed in order to estimate peak velocity and discharge of the flow, yield strength and viscosity of a representative Bingham fluid
