Abstract

This research examines the controls of tree-species distribution in an area that consists of a mosaic of former agricultural fields and uncleared bluff forest, on Mississippi River. The primary objectives are : 1) to determine the relative influence of multiple variables on forest composition, including topographic-moisture avaibility and disturbance history; and 2) to characterize the role of particular species in relation to disturbance and habitat conditions. These patterns then are used to elucidate the site characteristics and human impacts that should be considered in assessing the biogeographic uniqueness of the loess bluffs
