Pleistocene deposits in Pierre Saint-Martin Cave, French Pyrenees

Authors(s) and Affiliation(s)

The Aranzadi depositional sequence in the Pierre Saint-Martin Cave of the western Pyrenees is an important example because of the size of the deposit (300 m long, 30 m wide and 25 m high), and because of its location above a large collapse room, within a dry, abandoned river passage decoupled from the active stream galleries. As the Aranzadi Gallery is situated far downstream in the network beneath a forest cover, speleothems could be deposited in it during temperate periods. During cold periods sedimentation was directly controlled by glaciers and speleothem deposition was very limited or impossible
