Abstract

Focusing on analyses of three images, the A. argues that Broadway and Fifth Avenue are sites of political activity, but a politics that is defined as micropolitics of tactical transgressions made possible by the structure of social rituals. He shows how the streets of 19th century cities were neither completely democratic nor totally controlled public spaces
