Abstract

In this paper, ages of debris-fan are estimated from linear relation between surface age and the average depth of dissolution pits on carbonate boulders, beside the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park. Dissolution pits result from a combination of weakly acidic rainfall and the metabolic activity of blue-green algae. The average depth of dissolution pits increases with relative age of fan surfaces. If not the result of differential preservation of fan surfaces, the clustering implies periods of heightened debris-flow activity and increased precipitation
