Abstract

For this study, airflow over sand dunes (at Padre Island, Texas, The Algodones, California, and White Sands, New Mexico) was measured in order to discern the effect of slope on airflow profiles and the significance of this effect on calculated rates of sediment transport. The results of this study, which largely confirm some earlier work regarding the structure of airflow up dunes, srtrongly emphasize the inadequacies of traditional approaches to the determination of shear stress on duunes and have implications for theoretical models that have been developed for saltation
