This paper proposes to use a newly developed synoptic classification system (the spatial synoptic classification, or SSC, Kalkstein et al., 1996) to examine the spatial variability and trends in intensity of summertime precipitation in the eastern United States. Brief description of the development of the SSC, results and conclusions regarding the effectiveness of using this technique to analyze precipitation intensity
