The development of interferometric techniques applied to synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data has opened up many new applications for remote sensing. This paper focuses upon the discrimination and mapping of rock and soil types from multispectral data; the monitoring of volcanic activity, ash cloud, dust trajectories and fluxes; the vegetation monitoring; the forest and environmental management with remote-sensing techniques; the monitoring of lakes, rivers and estuaries from satellite images
