Abstract

This paper examines modern climate analogues of the western United States for 18,000 and 9000 yr B.P. in order to explain patterns of spatial heterogeneity. The study area of this paper includes the United States west of 93°W in order to cover a diverse range of spatial climatic controls and scales. The purpose is to offer insights into the details of the smaller scale responses to large-scale climatic controls. Three types of data were analyzed in this study, paleoclimatic evidence from biological and geological records, atmospheric circulation data, and surface climate data
