Abstract

The paper deconstructs a memorial to the ending of Shays'Rebellion in Petersham. The investigation of how a poor people's revolt was signified in the landscape is situated at the intersection of social theories dealing with discourse, regulation, iconology, landscape and semiotics. Two traditions are analyzed: regionalist, ethnocentric and patriotic ideologies of the New England Societies; and the modern discourse of evolutionism and progressivism. They are theorized as parts of a single discursive formation
