Abstract

Evidence is presented from investigations on plateau-top blockfields in still-glaciated regions of north Norway. They are of considerable age and probably have been forming since pre-Pleistocene times. They are composite landforms produced by a combination of deep weathering under warmer conditions and sorting by frost heaving processes under periglacial conditions. Overall, the findings presented here allow a re-evaluation of the significance of blockfields and their formative conditions but also allude to the need to fully recognise pre-glacial conditions for glacier erosion
