Using probate records as a source of occupation titles, a detailed picture of the service industries of the urban system of North-west England is drawn up and analysed against various models of central place systems. A well-developed and structured system was already in place in the region in the early-eighteenth century. Specialization within urban service provision cut across the hierarchical and spatial ordering of the system, suggesting a dynamic economy characterized by local industrial specialization
