Abstract

This study documents the mid-Holocene hemlock decline from a terrestrial site with in situ hemlock macrofossils and insects remains found in a paludifield dunefield at the northern limit of hemlock in eastern Canada. The findings indicate that defoliation can affect ecosystems for centuries, especially when long-lived tree species are involved
