Abstract

This paper reports results from glacial and paleoecological studies in the Cordillera Central of Colombia which are compared with similar data from other parts of the country. The study sites are located in the Ruíz-Tolima volcanic massif that forms part of the Cordillera Central. The stratovolcanoes have evolved since the late Pliocene, forming broad mountains rising above 5000 m. Using data from glacial geomorphology, tephra-soil stratigraphy and mineralogy, palynology, and radiocarbon dating, a sequence of glacial and bioclimatic stades and interstades has been identified for the past ca. 50,000 yr
