Abstract

This study examines the fossil diatoms of a continuous radiocarbon-dated core from Montezuma Well, Arizona, to assess past environmental conditions in this thermally constant spring. Periodic changes in the morphometry of the well, effects of site occupation by native Americans, and oscillations in regional climate as depicted by calcite deposition, frequency of indicator taxa, and total diatom cell density are discussed. This study also contributes to a better understanding of probable rates of evolution for endemic plant and animal species in Montezuma Well
