Tectonics and landscape evolution in southeast Australia

published at : Preglacial landforms

Authors(s) and Affiliation(s)

A hypothesis is presented here of the landscape evolution of southeast Australia which brings together evidence of landforms, tectonics, drainage patterns and sedimentary basins to make a consistent picture. The sedimentary record of the basins provides evidence of variation in the location and extent of erosion in the highlands, and the timing of major changes in drainage direction, caused mainly by tectonic warping. The major rivers can be traced back to Mesozoic and even Permian precursors
