Vegetation and seasonality shifts during the Late Quaternary deduced from [13]C/[12]C ratios of grazers at Equus Cave, South Africa

Authors(s) and Affiliation(s)

Season of rainfall can be a major influence on the relative proportions of C[3] and C[4] grasses in a landscape, since their relative distribution is essentially constrained by temperatures during the growing season. The aim of this paper was to investigate the nature and extent of C[3]/C[4] vegetation shifts over the Late Quaternary, and thus obtain a record of the season of rainfall for the area surrounding Equus Cave in the northern Cape Province. [13]C/[12]C ratios in tooth enamel carbonate of grazers from the site of Equus Cave, were used to this investigation
