Abstract

Fieldwork was carried out by the A. in February 1990. A principal aim was to investigate the island's recent tectonic history for which precise information about contemporary sea-level was needed. This proved no problem for Tongatapu's northern (low-energy) coast, where tidal range averages 1.2 m, but the relationship between sea-level and shoreline geomorphology proved less easy to discern along the south (high-energy) coast. Tongatapu's windward coasts are classified in this paper on the basis of algal-ridge height, which is an important control of shoreline morphology
