Climatic interpretation of alpine snowline variations on millennial time scales

Authors(s) and Affiliation(s)

This paper reviews methods of climatic interpretation of glacier fluctuations on time scales of 10[3] to 10[4] years. Glacier dynamics are not considered; rather, the problem is approached from the perspective of pertubations in the equilibrium-line altitude (ELA) or snowline of a glacier. The typical assumptions for paleoclimatic interpretations of snowline variations on millennial time scales are discussed. A minimum number of climatic parameters that need to be estimated in order to quantify climatic variation from snowline change in different geographic regions is specified
